Bake Off's Danni Reveals Whimsical Application Story
Dorset's Danni, an HGV administrator, applied for the new Great British Bake Off series "on a whim". Learn about their unique baking style and show

Danni, an HGV service centre administrator from Dorset, is among the 12 new contestants set to appear in the latest series of The Great British Bake Off, which begins on Channel 4 on Tuesday night. The 25-year-old revealed they applied for the show “on a whim” after growing tired of friends and family suggesting they should.

Danni, who lives with their parents, sister and three cocker spaniels, initially thought their application would be rejected. Speaking to the BBC, they explained: “I got sick of people telling me that so I was like ‘fine, I’ll apply’ and then I’ll get rejected and then I’ll be like ‘well, I tried, oh dear’.” They never anticipated reaching the “Big White Tent”, according to the Radio Times.

A Unique Baking Style

Described by the Bake Off website as “naturally curious and experimental”, Danni has a distinctive approach to baking. They are known for their love of foraging, incorporating ingredients such as magnolia, chestnut, and dandelion into their creations. These foraged finds are often combined with more “far-flung flavours” like ube and red bean paste.

Danni’s versatility in the kitchen is wide-ranging, stating to BBC Radio Solent that they “bake anything and everything,” from sausage rolls one week to a croquembouche the next. As a tech enthusiast, their passion extends to decorating bakes with inspiration drawn from video games and animation.

Challenges in the Tent

Filming for the series took place during a hot summer, which Danni admitted presented a challenge, though they would not specify how. Despite this, they praised the atmosphere within the tent, noting a strong “sense of camaraderie”. Danni’s personal “baking super power” is their perseverance. They told Radio Times that they “never give up,” viewing every failure as an opportunity to learn more, making the process more rewarding.

The New Series Details

This marks the 17th series of the popular baking contest. The judging panel will feature Paul Hollywood and welcome Nigella Lawson, who replaces Dame Prue Leith after nine years. The new cohort of bakers includes diverse talents such as a paediatric doctor, a competitive sprinter, a hairdresser, and a drag artist, alongside Danni. Paul Hollywood indicated the high standard of competition, telling Radio Times that contestants “almost have to be professional just to get into the tent.”
