In recent days, the prestigious Stanley Cup has been both a symbol of community celebration and a catalyst for significant team changes within the National Hockey League (NHL). While the trophy itself visited a First Nation community in Canada, a major trade involving a three-time Vezina Trophy-winning goaltender has dramatically reshaped the competitive landscape for teams aiming to lift the cup.

Blockbuster Trade Boosts New Jersey Devils’ Stanley Cup Ambitions

Goaltender Connor Hellebuyck has been traded from the Winnipeg Jets to the New Jersey Devils, a move finalised on Friday, 23rd October 2026, according to The Guardian. The deal sees the Devils acquire Hellebuyck, who previously backstopped the US to Olympic gold at the Milan-Cortina Games, in exchange for a substantial package of players and draft picks. This acquisition immediately positions the Devils “closer to being Stanley Cup contenders,” as reported by The Guardian, with Hellebuyck joining team-mate Jack Hughes, who famously scored the overtime winner against Canada in the Olympic final.

The trade concludes months of speculation and a “messy” process that included Hellebuyck’s public request to leave Winnipeg in September and a subsequent suspension by the Jets for failing to report to training camp. Hellebuyck, 33, leaves Winnipeg after an 11-year career with the team, having five seasons remaining on a seven-year contract with an annual salary cap hit of $8.5 million.

Pikangikum First Nation Welcomes Stanley Cup

Separately, the actual Stanley Cup trophy made a special visit to Pikangikum First Nation on 21st-22nd October, aiming to celebrate the northern community. The NHL and Hockey Hall of Fame facilitated the visit, bringing a piece of hockey history to a community whose narrative extends “far beyond the challenges it has faced,” as reported by the Winnipeg Sun. The event underscored Canada’s diversity, which was described by Andrew Ference, pictured with children during the visit, as one of the country’s greatest strengths.

Players Acquired by Winnipeg Jets in Hellebuyck Trade

In return for Connor Hellebuyck, the Winnipeg Jets acquired a significant roster overhaul from the New Jersey Devils, as confirmed by NHL.com. The package includes:

He was New Jersey’s first-round pick in the 2020 NHL Draft and won gold at the 2020 World Junior Championships with Canada.
  • Alexander Command: An 18-year-old Swedish forward, Command was New Jersey’s first-round pick in the 2026 NHL Draft. He has played six games for Orebro HK in the Swedish League this season, and won a gold medal with Sweden at the 2026 World U-18 Championships.
  • Nico Daws: The 25-year-old German-born goaltender has a 2-2-0 record in four games for the Devils this season, with a 2.78 goals-against average and an .874 save percentage. He was a third-round pick in the 2020 NHL Draft and was a teammate of Mercer’s on Canada’s gold-winning 2020 World Juniors squad.
  • Nick Bjugstad: A 34-year-old American forward, currently recovering from surgery. He has played 821 career NHL games for eight teams, accumulating 339 points (163G, 176A). Bjugstad won bronze medals with the United States at the 2011 World Juniors and 2013 World Championships.

The Jets also received New Jersey’s second-round pick in the 2029 NHL Draft and a seventh-round pick in the 2027 NHL Draft.
