Barcelona’s sporting director, Deco, has stated that the club holds no interest in Manchester United teenager JJ Gabriel, despite reports linking the 15-year-old with a move to the Spanish giants. This denial comes after Gabriel informed Manchester United of his desire to leave Old Trafford and subsequently travelled to Spain earlier this month.
Barcelona’s Stance on Gabriel
Deco addressed the speculation directly at a news conference, remarking, “There’s nothing to say about this boy.” He further clarified Barcelona’s position, stating, “We are not interested in any player in his situation. I’m not sure what’s happening, and if he’s still a Manchester United player. We are not involved in that.” The sporting director emphasised the club’s general policy regarding young players, adding, “To speak about young, teenage players, it is not our business.” He also noted that Barcelona would need to “understand how the situation is before we try to do something,” as reported by BBC Sport.
Gabriel’s Future and Other Potential Suitors
Gabriel, who scored a hat-trick on his UEFA Youth League debut on 10 September, has not trained with United since. German publication Bild has reported that he “will definitely leave United” by next summer at the latest, with a move to Europe appearing increasingly likely, according to the Daily Star. Real Madrid, Bayern Munich, and Paris Saint-Germain are among the clubs reportedly vying for his signature.
Gabriel’s prospects of joining a European powerhouse are significantly enhanced by his ability to obtain an EU passport. His mother has Greek-Cypriot heritage, and his father is a former Republic of Ireland international, meaning he could join an EU club once he turns 16 on 6 October. Non-EU citizens are typically barred from playing for the first team of clubs like Barcelona or Bayern until their 18th birthday.
Gabriel’s request to be de-registered at United was reportedly turned down. Last week, United manager Michael Carrick urged caution regarding the “exposure and scrutiny” given to the youngster.
Implications for Manchester United
The potential departure of Gabriel would undoubtedly be a disappointment for Manchester United supporters who had hoped to see the young talent develop at Old Trafford. Prior to joining United in 2022, Gabriel had stints with Chelsea, Arsenal, and West Ham. His reported decision-making is influenced by a lack of immediate title prospects at the club. Manchester United’s senior team currently sits 12th in the Premier League, having secured only one win in the domestic season so far – a 5-2 comeback victory over Ipswich in August.
