Katie Zelem, former Manchester United captain, is poised to make her highly anticipated return to Leigh as West Ham United Women visit her old club on Sunday. This marks Zelem’s first appearance back at the Progress With Unity Stadium since her departure from United, now wearing the West Ham armband.
Zelem’s Journey Back to Leigh
Zelem spent six years with Manchester United, a period during which she captained the team to their historic first Women’s FA Cup triumph in May 2024. She made more than 150 appearances, becoming a recognisable figure in the club’s modern women’s era. Her return to her former home is highlighted in Manchester United’s official match programme, acknowledging this significant fixture, as reported by Read West Ham.
After leaving Manchester, the 30-year-old midfielder played for Angel City before returning to England to join London City Lionesses. She initially moved to West Ham on loan in January and completed a permanent transfer during the summer. Ahead of the 2026/27 campaign, Rita Guarino appointed Zelem as West Ham captain.

Zelem’s immediate focus will be on helping West Ham improve their standing in the Women’s Super League (WSL), where they currently have three points from their opening three fixtures. The Hammers travel north having recently secured their first clean sheet of the season in Wednesday’s goalless Players Cup draw with Tottenham, which they subsequently won via a penalty shootout, according to Read West Ham.
